Show 2.08, “A director, an actor and a film critic walk into a bar…”

Director/Producer Courtney Dawson. Source: Canberra Times.

The Australian film industry is known overseas for our critically acclaimed indie dramas but we often fall short when it comes to connecting to our own audiences at
home.

Courtney Dawson, a young up-and-coming filmmaker and journalist from Sydney, is concerned
about these trends and has set out to make a documentary about what is ailing our
industry – aptly called Advance Australian Film. She chatted to me about the project and how she is encouraging audience participation through crowdfunding.

While studying a Bachelor of Media at the University of Adelaide, Anders Wotzke (seen above) discovered he could see free movies if he submitted reviews to the student newspaper, On Dit. From those humble beginnings, he has since branched out and started his own website and brand, CutPrintReview.com. Anders just got back into Adelaide after attending the prestigious Talent Campus at the Berlin International Film Festival as one of the Talent Press. He came into the studio to tell us all about the experience (falling asleep in theatres, overhearing enraged producers, and battling deadlines with jetlag) and we drill him for his opinion on the Australian film industry while we’re at it.

Robbie Magasiva

Australian audiences may not yet recognise Robbie Magasiva but he’s a bit of a super star in his native New Zealand. He can bee seen every weeknight on soap Shortland Street, is a member of comedy group The Naked Samoans and is the face of the Sione’s Wedding franchise (known as Somaon Wedding in NZ). Sione’s 2: Unfinished Business set a new record for the local box office in New Zealand, taking in more than $775 000 on its first weekend. Radio Adelaide compadre Susan Sohar spoke to Robbie for “Behind the Screens”, covering the film, his experience on Lord of the Rings, his best Australian accent and how Peter Jackson has changed the way the world sees NZ.

We rounded out the show with a quick review of the AIDC, or the Australian International Documentary Conference, that we both attended during the week down at Glenelg.
