Show 3.01, “The Agent Who Cast Me”

Katie and Gareth join Jordan and Finley

Katie & Gareth join Jordan & Finley

Some people say it’s rule number one, never work with children or animals! But perhaps kids deserve a bit more credit. In the lead up to Tropfest 2013 the Media Resource Centre has worked with a number of kids under 15-years-old creating films for Tropfest Junior.

Two films that came from their Tropfest Junior Bootcamp, How to Make a Horror Movie and Jumping Championships, have been shortlisted for the 2013 festival, along with Agora in the adult category.

Katie Powell and Gareth Wilkes from the Media Resource Centre joined us in the studio and gave us the low down on what went into preparing these films.

Carina & Nick with Jordan & Finley

The film industry, and acting in general, can often be quite difficult to break into. There are so many big productions going on in South Australia at the moment but how do you get in on the action? Where do you start?

Agencies are in place to connect productions seeking actors or extras with people who suit the part, while also helping performers prepare for the challenges of the industry.

Carina Gun and Nick Buckland run the Adelaide Artists Agency, and they joined us on the show to talk about the important role that agencies play.

And just like that, Behind The Screens is back for another year, so keep tuning in at 11am Saturdays on Radio Adelaide, on digital radio, online and 101.5fm, or on the podcast right here!

Show 2.22, “Let’s Talk Derby”

thisisrollerderby.com

Last week Adelaide was host to The Great Southern Slam which brought a reported 1.3 million dollars into the state, along with a few hundred roller derby players and fans. What is roller derby? This Is Roller Derby. Well, that’s the name of an upcoming documentary by Australian director Daniel Hayward. But if you want an intro into the culture of derby and exactly why it’s the fastest growing women’s sport in the world (it’s even up for consideration to enter in the Olympic competition) check out the above trailer.

Daniel tells us the story of how he was introduced to the derby world and how it’s constantly evolving.

We bang on about the Media Resource Centre a fair bit on the show. But there’s good reason. If you’re an emerging filmmaker in Adelaide it’s your one stop shop for advice, equipment and they have a whole bunch of initiatives aimed at assisting people in making their first short films (and even beyond).

Katie Powell, production coordinator at MRC, came into the studio to tell us all about their new initiatives, including opportunities for funding short animation and music videos. I must apologise for our giggling Gertie antics during the start. But that’s why you love us, right?

We also replayed our interview with armourer John Coory. Ever wanted to know who’s behind all the explosions and gun fights on films? John is one of those guys.

Show 1.11, “The Morning After”

Last night Chrissy and I attended the South Australian Screen Award gala. It was pretty fabulous and photos will come eventually. It’s an exciting time in SA film right now. One of the presenters called it “the perfect storm”. The fact that we could have EIGHT feature length films in competition is testimony to all the activity happening in the moment. A full list of winners can be found at the MRC website.

Sieh Mchawala is running the Doco Essentials workshop next weekend at the MRC. He’s also a filmmaker in his own right having completed his first feature length documentary Barefoot in Ethiopia. We got him on the phone to have a bit of a chat to him about his career and his experience with documentaries.

Last week we played you the first part of our interview of Mad Bastards director Brendan Fletcher. This week we look more into the process of making a highly organic piece which evolved from improvisation. We asked him how he made it work and why do two separate shoots.

Alexandra Blue was our very first interviewee back when we started the show in December in our summer time slot. Since then she’s started her own production company, Bluebird Productions and her first live action short film Daddy Daddy won the People’s Choice award on the night it screened at this year’s Shorts Film Festival. She came into the studios today to talk about the latest film she produced, Unfinished Thoughts.

Daniel Henshell graduated from The Actors Centre in 2006 after a two year course and has been acting professionally since. You might have caught him in the television series Out of the Blue or as the hapless boyfriend in a series of Telstra commercials. He’s making is big screen debut playing Australia’s worst serial killer, John Bunting, in Snowtown. I spoke to Daniel and started off by asking him what attracted him to the project.

Snowtown is released nationally on Thursday. On the next show we interview the director Justin Kurzel and pick his brains about his creative process and how he dealt with the subject matter.
