Daniel Nettheim is the director of The Hunter, premiering next week, about a mercenary, played by American Willem Dafoe, sent to the Tasmanian wilderness by a mysterious biotech company to hunt for the mythical Tasmanian Tiger.

It’s based on a novel by Julia Leigh, who has become a filmmaker in her own right earlier in the year with her directorial debut Sleeping Beauty.

Beck spoke to Daniel about his relationship with Tasmania, the local politics, and his brother’s tiger hunts on set. But first, how did his love affair with film begin?

In the second part of the interview, Beck asked about Willem Dafoe’s involvement, working with children and if Julia Leigh had any influence over the film.

Last week, Chrissy and I spoke to one of the director’s of Mrs Carey’s Concert and we asked her for the “Behind the Screens” staple – Rant Of The Week (where we discuss the state of the Australian film industry). Sophie discussed the need for more positive stories and a different approach to film funding.

Show 1.30, “Mrs Carey’s Concert and Mr Weber’s Words”

Sophie Raymond with Bob Connolly (Photo: AFI Blog)

Mrs Carey’s Concert has been an unlikely sucess story. It follows the story of a music director, Karen Carey, at an all girls’ school in Sydney, preparing her students for a concert at the Opera House. Mrs Carey believes in ‘the transformative power of great music’ but her passion is not shared by all her students – music is compulsory at MLC School.

After only 11 weeks in theatres it crossed the $1 million mark at the Box Office and has recently received an AFI Award nomination for Best Feature Length Documentary.

Sophie Raymond directed Mrs Carey’s Concert with Bob Connolly. It was her first venture into live action film! We asked Sophie how she got involved in the project (part one) and if she still keeps in contact with the main ‘characters’ of the film (part two).

Josef J Weber, director, producer, writer

Josef J Weber is known around Adelaide as “that horror guy” but while he has had success in the genre he has a lot more than just horror in his sights.

His independently financed short I Rot has made it into film festivals all over the world and he’s in the pre-production stages of two music videos funded through the Media Resource Centre’s Clip It initative.

Rebecca spoke to Josef about his upcoming projects, his thoughts on the term “torture porn” and his upcoming trip to Los Angeles. But, of course, we need to know where his career began.
